I wanted to see how much XP I could bank in one short session doing nothing but opening chests. Lockpicking pays experience per lock in the Gothic 1 Remake now, so I set a timer for fifteen minutes and ran an Old Camp chest loop. The result: well over 4,000 XP, no combat, and not a single broken pick.

Here is exactly how the run went.

The setup

I started in the Old Camp because it has the most locked chests crammed into the smallest area. The plan was simple: walk a loop, open every chest I passed, and don't waste a second counting plate turns. To make sure I never snapped a pick, I let the tool play each lock for me.

The run, minute by minute

The first few chests went down in seconds each — point at the lock, let it open, grab the loot, move on. Because each open paid XP on top of the contents, the experience bar moved noticeably with every chest, not just every fight. By the halfway mark I had already cleared most of the camp's easy chests and the levels were ticking.

The chests I worked through were the usual Old Camp names — Diego, Gomez, Bartholo, Mordrag and several more. None of them fought back. None of them cost me a reload.

The result

When the timer hit fifteen minutes I had opened a full loop of chests and banked more than 4,000 XP — a stack of early levels for a session with no risk and no grinding. Doing the same loop by hand, I would have lost time counting turns and almost certainly snapped a pick or two, which is XP left on the floor.

Easy XP · easy leveling

Run your own 15-minute XP loop

Golden Lockpick opens every lock on the first try, so a chest run is pure XP — no broken picks, no reloads. It is free to download and use. Set a timer and see how many levels you can bank.

Your mileage will vary with which chests you have access to and your route, but the principle holds: more chests opened means more XP, and the only thing that slows you down is breaking picks. Remove that and a loop is all upside.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really get 4,000 XP in 15 minutes from chests?
In a chest-dense area like the Old Camp, a clean loop of opens — each paying XP per lock — adds up to several thousand XP quickly. Your exact total depends on which chests you can reach and your route.
Do I need a high level to start a chest XP run?
No. A chest run requires no combat, so you can do it very early. It is one of the safest ways to pick up your first levels in the Gothic 1 Remake.
How do I keep the run fast?
Don't count plate turns by hand. Golden Lockpick opens each lock instantly and never breaks a pick, so you spend the whole session collecting XP instead of reloading saves.
